personal work

Just some more of my personal work. The first one started out as a doodle in my sketchbook which i then scanned and the coloured in Photoshop using the original line work.

werewolf

These ones were done from scratch in Photoshop. Both images started out completely black and white and any colour was added after the tonal values.

life drawing

Had my first couple of life drawing classes at uni. It was good to get back into it after 4 years but I'm finding I'm still quite rusty. My line quality needs a lot of work and some of my proportioning hasn't been great, especially on the fore shortening, but I love life drawing. here are just a few pieces from my classes. I think they were all 10 minute poses, although some may be 15 minutes.

Bouncy ball

Finally got the bouncy ball converted to avi, so here it is. Really simple with squash and stretch.

The second part of this task was to turn the ball into something so I made mine into a little bouncing dog :). If I was do this again I'd make it a lot slower, just now I feel its too fast.

Start of uni

Week one of uni done! It’s been a really good week and been nice to get back into studying again, although I still don’t feel like I’m back at uni yet. I’m sure that will change soon!

So far this week I’ve met some wonderful and wonderfully crazy people as well as starting with the basics of animation. Our first task was the bouncing ball exercise.  We had to animate a bouncing ball after observing a bouncy ball on different surfaces.  I have animated a few pencil tests of a bouncing ball. Here is the first one, a really simple and quick bouncing ball (no squash and stretch).
The 2nd one I did (sorry not converted it to avi yet) had the squash and stretch to emphasise the balls movement and give it more ‘bounce’.Here is an image from Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas’s book ‘Illusion of life ‘detailing the bouncing ball.

Here are some images from my summer project (any pictures in my sketchbook are ©Disney) . I chose to do a sketchbook based on Disney’s 9 old men:  Les Clark; Marc Davis; Ollie Johnston; Milt Kahl; Ward Kimball; Eric Larson; John Lounsbury; Wolfgang Reitherman; Frank Thomas.  They refined the principles of animation which animators abide by today and have inspired generations!  I found that their work on the early films and shorts of Disney inspiring. Their work was engaging and entertaining and I knew exactly what the characters were thinking. They really made me believe in the characters and stories and at some I found myself particularly caught up in the emotions shown on screen (and yes, even a few tears were shed). Their work has certainly inspired me and I always remember watching the films when I was younger and then trying to draw the characters I had just seen. This was the start of me drawing and I’ve never stopped since. Thanks guys J

Ipad bits and bobs

These hockey players were done for the club I play for and were completed using the art rage app on my ipad. They wanted a character to put on some posters advertising our training. The one on the top was the original one and the one they used although I had a bit of fun doing the other one. She's a bit harder and feistier, you wouldn't want to mess with her, shes more likely to swing at your head than the hockey ball!

These next ones were done on my ipad as well using procreate.

bits and bobs

Here are just a few pieces of my work, personal and from college

The first two are figure studies from college.

The one on the left I did with my left hand (I'm right handed) and the other I did with an extended pencil (imagine fencing with a pencil). I found they were good exercises for loosening up and for looking at the marks I make on the page.
These ones are ones I've been doing in my personal time. I have recently been introduced to Photoshop and have been trying my hand at digital painting. These are some of my first attempts. The one on the left was a practice in porcelain skin and the other one was a practice in clouds.

Monday 3 September 2012

Hey all,

Just got my matriculation form for uni today and I thought it was a good time to start this blogging thing... :) I will be starting at uni for real next monday in animation!! its scary going back but its gonna be good!

I really just want to share my work and experiences and hopefully hear from some like minded people. I'd appreciate any tips, comments and criticims or any words of wisdom that can inspire or keep me from tearing my hair out.

For now I'll leave you with a few words of wisdom:
"in order to do the fantastic we must first understand the real" Walt Disney
